Would Irish Rail ever consider introducing (or re-introducing) a 10 Journey type ticket for those of us frequent yet unpredictable users.

It would save a lot of hassle with "no ticket office open" or "auto machine not working or locked up" type scenarios at the destination station.

10 journey tickets where withdrawn over 10 years ago due to rampant fare evasion, far too many people skipped past the ticket checkers at Pearse, Tara and Connolly saving themselves a journey each time.

They used to be valid for 3 months, then they cut them to 14 days. As far as I can remember they where never issued for journeys outside the Dublin suburban area.

The 10 journey concept works great if you have a fully gated system, see Paris Metro. But there is no such thing as a ten journey ticket, its more like a pack of 10 single tickets.

Smart card ticketing will arrive in the next 2 years or so, so everyone should automatically be charged the cheapest fares for the journeys undertaken.

If the booking office is closed you are fully legally permitted to travel without a ticket. We have yet to hear from anyone who has been issued with a fine in this case. The rules are very very clear, booking office closed travel without a ticket, obtain from conductor or at destination.
