Its a fair few miles to Limerick Junction to the bridge.

Last I checked Down was away from Dublin. Not that normal people would know that.

Hmm, no longer up and down. No fun strictly speaking a train to Kerry is going up not down. No need for rail operating jargon in a notice

The bridge most definitely is not in Limerick Junction, its a river between Thurles and Limerick Junction. The replacement bridge has been sitting there for a few weeks.

Limerick Junction-Thurles is 20.5 miles and there are no intermediate crossovers, so single-line operation is really capacity limiting, especially with hourly Cork services. I would imagine that most Limerick services will be Heuston-Thurles only, and that Cork trains will make extra stops at Limerick Jcn to give connections. Also all up (sorry!) Cork trains will probably get delayed 15 minutes to allow down Corks to clear the single-line section, so all that timetable padding will at last pay off.

I assume they will renew one track at a time and maintain single line working. Complete closure would be really chaotic.

With a direct curve at Ballybrophy some of those Limerick trains could simply divert (albeit v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y). Oh well!

Mark Gleeson
14-08-2008, 18:27
Indeed, the new intercity railcars would be able to make the trip, and would be able to manage the Ballybrophy arrangements with much greater ease than a locomotive hauled train

lots of work ongoing at Brophy. dont get too excited, looks like an extra bay or two

If you are on the 9:00 to Cork or the 17:25 to Limerick on Saturday 30th, if you change at Ballybrophy there is a train via Nenagh, ok it won't be quick but it will be a lot better than a bus transfer from Thurles to Limerick

They will have to divert some trains via Nenagh, if they don't once again passenger suffers despite a clear workable solution. Give good odds on the early morning Limerick Dublin services going via Nenagh, as they have in the past

Took a bit of white space out above

Looks like some sense anyway fairly good use of Nenagh line for Limerick Dublin services, just a pity they aren't running them direct, with a railcar would be much faster just do the strange reverse procedure than get everyone to lug the stuff between trains
