Funny thing today..

I got the 16:00 home today, as I was finishing early (lucky me!) to Mullingar and quite a strange thing happened at Enfield...

The train was arriving to Enfield but the train didnt change track to Platform one. It kept going slowly past the station.

Now at this stage some commuters looked worried and then when it passed right by, Out came the commuter's mobile phones! They didnt look too happy..

Then a pathetic announcement on the intercom: "Sorry Folks.. due to a fault on the tracks, I have to reverse back to enfield.. sorry for any inconvenience caused.." and out he got from the driver cab and walked to the dublin end.. Eventually, we arrived back there..

Quite strange I thought!

I wonder what happened?

There was a problem with the signaling in Enfield recently enough we know that.

The slow speed of approach would clearly indicate the driver was intent on stopping not a case of human error on the drivers part, possibly a error by the signalman or a legitimate track fault

Clearly everyone should have been told before the train arrived in Enfield, no excuses for not telling everyone, the driver would have known 400+ meters from the station that he wasn't getting the platform just by looking at the signal ahead.

why didnt he let people off on the other platform?

Or is that platform defunct?

Second platform is a no go, its useable in fact if slightly low, the surface isn't great, getting out of the station might be an issue

Clearly the restoration of the second platform to service will be required in coming years

No excuse, if the timetable says it stops it stops

In days of old when trains had guards if a train failed to stop as expected the guard would pull the brake.

If it does happen again let us know the date so we can follow up
