The announcement about the Limerick Junction to Waterford cancellations says that it is "due to vandalism".
Very strange. Is this someone's way of describing what the drivers are up to?
Even stranger, it also seems to imply that the vandalism will cease after 2 weeks.

Of course IE in no hurry to fix the problem

It appears a train was damaged after a collision and repairs will take time

Assuming the collision was as a result of vandalism it's a pity the local guards wouldn't treat it as attempted mass murder, call in reinforcements to bang on enough doors, find these chavs and make an example to them to their colleagues in Dublin and elsewhere.
Given the ridership on the line they might have a problem getting "mass" to stick though

From today's Munster Express (Waterford Local paper)
Five arrested over rail line debris
Friday, February 29th, 2008
Waterford gardai investigating the dumping of debris on the Waterford to Limerick rail line last Monday have made two further arrests. That brings to five the number arrested in relation to the incident - and there could be more to come.
Thousands of euro worth of damage was done to a rail car and there was some disruption of services. Nobody was injured but gardai said the situation was potentially very dangerous.

Train involved has got back in Inchicore, the crew in Drogheda will have to rebuild it, looking at several tens of thousands possibly 6 figures to repair
Another railcar was damaged in Ballina yesterday and there was one down in Silvermines last Autumn as well.
There has been a serious vandal problem in the Waterford - Clonmel area for ages.
Sadly the trains on the line don't carry forward facing CCTV camera would be a serious help to id the vandals since they typically hang around to watch the outcome
