deafening speakers....

In the last 3 days, every train I have gotten on (maynooth - dublin)has had the volume on the automated announcements at a deafening level. On Saturday the issue was only exascerbated by the driver's use of the microphone wwhich in turn created a constant reverberant feedback throughout the train. Just my luck to have left my ipod at home,I was completed deafened and hd ringing in my ars for the best part of last night....When I mentioned this to the train driver on saturday about his miucrophone /feedback and the overly loud announcements he claimed that there is not volume control,and he wasin turn not to blame...what the hell is going on?

There is no volume control to which the driver has access, the system is meant to sample the ambient noise level and adjust the volume to an appropriate level dynamically

For the last year people have been complaining they can't hear the damn thing in the first place

Feedback is as a result of poor use of the pa handset, it happens even if the volume level is perfectly set

Actually if the volume was set at a raised level and there is a speaker in the driver's carriage then there will be feedback, so a raised volume would be contributing to it, and well if the driver was stupid enough to have the handset resting idly on top of say a speaker.....
If the volume can't be controlled then i must have gotten on the same train those few days because this thing was unbearable...I play guitar (LOUD),have played many gigs and endured some seriously grating and loud noises, but for some reason the sound of the automated announcer was by far the most excruciating noise i'd heard in a LONG time. I understand you are saying that people complain the things are too quiet, but if you were on this train you would understand the complaint fully.

Agreed, I was on a Gorey service once and the sound was so unreal. It is so sharp and goes through your ears.
