The 505 from conolly to sligo has broken down again. This time at enfiels. Got knows how long this time!!!. How IE can use these relics of trains to ferrry passengers around is a mystery. What is the story with the new trains coming into service?

Well its either the old train or no train at all, the no train option isn't much good

We will see what actually went wrong tonight, probably not the coaches at fault

I cannot wait for these new 100% reliability trains, from everything I've heard all these breakdowns will disappear for ever with the 22ks...

(Not a remark at you Lambo but in general!)

Iarnród Éireann has confirmed that a power failure on the line caused a delay for the Sligo train service near Enfield in Co Meath yesterday evening.

The train was delayed at Enfield for over an hour.

Earlier this month, Irish Rail apologised to passengers whose train journey from Sligo to Dublin took more than seven hours because of engine failure.

power failure on the line When did they start using EMUs on the Sligo route?

would the power failure not affect the signalling?

Signalling probably, that said the system should have a generator

Problem with the Sligo line signalling and with all Mini CTC is if the power dies to bring the system back up requires a lot of hassle since it hasn't a clue where any trains are, since if a train moves when the power is off its not recorded

Mainline CTC reboots it knows where everything is in a few seconds, might not know what each train is but knows its there and trains can get moving very quickly

Whats the difference between Mini CTC and Mainline CTC? I am guessing its a larger more expensive system to install (Mainline as opposed to Mini?)

Basically mainline CTC uses track circuts to note what trains are in which blocks.

Mini CTC usues axle counters at stations and junctions to check a train into a block, no other train can then go into that block until the train is checked out at another axle counter. But if the train goes over an axle counter when the power is off, the signalling system won't have a clue where anything is.

In my experience, delays due to signal failures are more frequent and more severe now than they were back in the semaphore days on the Sligo line.
That is quite damning.

Money is being saved, but the service improvements we were promised have not materialised.
