Walking from the docklands to Tara/Connolly

Hi

Due to overcrowding on the Maynooth to Connolly/Pearse line Im going to try taking the docklands train and then making my way over to either Connolly or Tara to catch a Dart southbound. Do many people do this? How long of a walk is it from the docklands station to either Connolly or Tara? Im anticipating when the phoenix park station opens there will be futher problems so hopefully this will be an alternative

I have been doing something similiar for the last few weeks.

The quickest station to walk to is Pearse - out of Docklands, turn left, down
to the quays across the new pedestrian bridge and up.
Brisk walk takes 13 to 15 minutes.

Normally get 07:56 from Ashtown. Gets in at 08:07. Make
Pearse for 08:22, get the railcar to Blackrock, arrive Blackrock
about 08:40.

Sometimes get a seat in Ashtown, but there is normally less
than 10 people standing.

Advantages are the healthy walk, avoiding the crush and not having
to wait outside Connolly for a Platform.

I have got the earlier train from Ashtown ( 07:11 ) and normally hook
up with either the 07:35 or 07:41 to Blackrock.

There is no time penatly in going via Docklands, its just as fast since journey to Docklands is quicker and the walk over to Pearse is only a few minutes more than the Connolly Pearse journey time

Of course it works a lot better in good weather :rolleyes:

Only issue is tickets, single and returns won't like going through the turnstile in Pearse, weekly and monthly will be fine

There is some extra capacity coming in January which will ease things slightly

I tried it today, lovely unpacked 10 min journey:) . I walked to Tara which took 15 mins. I think its better then going to Pearse but the length of the walk seems to be the same. Its certainly well worth it, the whole thing just added ten mins to my journey, and as you say the healthy walk in the morning is a bonus. I caught the train as I was getting worried about not actually being able to board the other trains coming from Maynooth. I certainly think that will be a real problem once the new station at Phoenix park opens. Looks like docklands arrived just in time, I think many more people will opt for this route in the future. I wish I worked in the IFSI , it would make thinkgs so much handier

you could also get the river taxi from outside spencer dock and then walk down to Grand canal dock station.

its a very slightly longer walk, but you could tell people you commute by boat...

It's possibly shorter to the door of Connolly, but it's definitely quicker walking to Pearse, at least by the time you get to the platform. Tara St is a fair bit further, with a busy junction to cross.

When the new bridge at Guild St opens, it could actually be nearly as close to Grand Canal Dock.

Will that new bridge be pedestrian only or both ? - I was wondering what
was going on behind the hoarding.

Grand Canal could be good, once you don't get caught in a stampede trying
to get up the stairs

the new bridge will be cars and pedestrians - the river taxi currently crosses at about the same point.

Best option is firmly Pearse until the Macken Street bridge appears

Grand Canal Dock will become the better option when the bridge opens, probably going via Docklands to Grand Canal Dock will become the fastest possible way to get from D15 to the southside coast at peak hours

Indeed, i'd keep that in mind. Now if only they can manage to add some addtional Clonsilla Docklands services some time next year

also there is a bus connection that leads you to connolly-tara street-d'olier street-dame street even adamstown! not bad!

Disappointing though that there will be cutbacks to docklands in the new timetable, this service will catch on eventually.

Cutbacks are all at off peak times where the passenger numbers where rarely in double digits at Docklands

Trains via Connolly P7 will do heaps more business off peak

Does anyone know the scheduled completion date for the Macken Street bridge ?I imagine its at least a year away, they are still doing the foundations, although a lot of work is probably in progress off-site in prefabricating elements.
