Can confirm a train vs van incident at a open level crossing in Oranmore this morning

From breakingnews.ie:

"A train on the main line from Dublin to Galway has collided with a van at a level crossing this morning.

The driver of the van was injured when his vehicle was struck by the 7.10am service from Dublin in Gurraun North in Co Galway just before 10am.

None of the 120 passengers on board the train were hurt and the van driver's injuries are not thought to be serious.

However, delays are expected to rail services in the area."

i think this is the spot
apologies for the confusing map - the rail line goes horizontal and the road that our hero was driving along runs vertical

i reckon the crash took place where the 3 mile post is marked

this used to be a tiny road to nowhere, rarely used
but in the last few years a few hundred houses have been put in to the north of the railway line - i imagine the road has got alot busier as a result

I don't think that's the one, the level crossing you've marked in is in Ros Cam, It's a gate type crossing.
RTE's photo shows trees and there's none in rs cam that I remember.

Crossing in question is a open ungated crossing with flashing lights, aka a type LB

The lights and warning buzzer could clearly be heard on the RTE report and the crossing looked to be to modern specification

RosCam is the place i was talking about even though the media are saying Gurran which i've never heard of

i can't think of to many other at-grade crossings in the area apart from the one in Oranmore itself which this clearly isn't

there doesn't seem to be any other candidates on this map at any rate

Its good to see Irish Rail can't even record a accident correctly

What is an accident?

arnród Éireann investigating Oranmore incident by Corporate Communications


18th January 2007

Iarnród Éireann is investigating this morning's incident in which the 07.10hrs Heuston to Galway train struck a van at Gurraun Level Crossing near Oranmore.

Thankfully, the driver of the van was not seriously injured, and he is currently being treated in hospital. There were no injuries to passengers or crew on board the train.

A full investigation has been launched.

Why are there open crossings on an intercity line!?

I could understand the logic of crossings on the DART lines controlled by lights and buzzers.. but on an intercity line it's quite strange.

How fast do those trains run there? 70mph + ?
