Why has the track been removed from this platform (including the points at each end). Is this more Irish Rail waste as that piece of track has hardly ever been used. (I have occaisionally seen an empty 29K parked there)

This is discussed in the members area.
DART services will be using platform 3 in the future

The current northbound platform will become a a turnback platform for diesel services and platform 3 will be the main northbound platform.
All part of the city centre resignalling project.
P3 has never been signalled for passenger use - it could only be used by out of service trains.

The points were most likely lifted and put elsewhere on the network as a short term solution given the financial pressures which is good use of current inifstructire.

This is the same arrangement as applies at Pearse whereby southbound DARTS weave around trains turning back northbound/westbound on the main southbound line between Pearse and Grand Canal Dock.
Will the new arrangements make DART even slower ?

Imagine the points were scrapped given that they were in situ for more than 30 years !
