Luas red line trams have been tested over the past several weeks to check fracture cracks in motorized bogies.

On Saturday an in service tram travelling Connolly to Saggart was lucky to escape a derailment when one of the bogie axles (wheels) snapped.

The RAIU are currently investigating the matter.

Transdev and the RPA have failed to inform the public of this serious incident and <snip>

It is suspected that several trams have serious axle fractures.

Top brass management within Luas where questioned by RAIU and RSC on Sunday at the Red Cow depot.

At Monday lunchtime, Trandev said that no incident had been logged.

The RSC confirm that they have been informed by Transdev.

We are informed by the RPA an incident did occur.

We would be grateful if you could provide a statement of what you know to the RAIU and RSC.

Would these tests not be a regular thing part of a maintenance cycle?

There are scheduled ultrasonic tests.

Note the newer 402 series tram does not have axles in the normal sense, only the red line 301/401 fleet have traditional axles.

All use resilient wheels.

As Colm has posted Transdev did notify the RSC as per their legal obligations.
