Junior Minister Kelly under fire
North Tipperary Minister of State Alan Kelly is under fire for pulling rank to secure a special train for Tipp supporters to the All Ireland Hurling Final.
A report in today’s Irish Independent claims the Portroe native put considerable pressure on Iarnrod Eireann to run the train from Birdhill, Nenagh and Roscrea.
Deputy Kelly is the Minister of State with Responsibility for Public Transport.
The report points out that there was no equivalent service from Nenagh when Tipperary reached the All-Ireland finals in 2001, 2009 or 2010.
For their part Iarnrod Eireann say running the special train was justified as it was 90% full.
Another issue raised in the article is the fact that alcohol was available on the service. Special trains also ran from Waterford for Kilkenny supporters and one from Limerick Junction for Tipperary fans. However, no alcohol was sold onboard.
Also the train from Limerick Junction broke down in Thurles. They had to get 2x3 car sets from Laois
