[Question] Cork - Port Laoise Ticket

hi guys,

any idea roughly what the cost of a return ticket from Cork to Portlaoise would be?

Not a day-return - going UP on Wednesday evening and DOWN Thursday early afternoon.

I can get one for €44 online, but was just wondering if I turned up @ a booking office, would it be cheaper?

Online should always be cheaper, discounted fares do apply on your journey

It seems to me that this is a national issue. I very occasionally need to buy a return from Longford to Edgeworthstown which is about 7 miles and get charged €7.50 for the privilege. Now it isn't a big market but I would think the majority of people would just dodge this fare given that very few trains have ticket collectors on them.

This is quite frankly stupid and blatantly favours the Dublin region. Rail fares in Ireland are in general quite reasonable so long as either your origin or destination is Dublin.

It is 8.5 miles which puts it in zone A

The problem is that fares are calculated by distance bands and not the true distance

In this case
2.42 per mile

In comparison

Seapoint - Pearse 4.75 miles, 4.30 return
2.20 per mile

If you do plot intercity fares on a graph there is a linear relationship between distance and cost up to about 250km, the line intercepts at 4.70 which is the lowest fare
