What spare capacity is there on 7am to 8.30am commuter trains that are passing by the Adamstown station currently under construction and due to open in March 2007?

What spare capacity is there on 5pm to 6.30pm commuter trains leaving Heuston?

The planning scheme promised an am peak hour capacity of 600 - 1000 passengers places at Adamstown.

Firstly Kildare line users have never seen how many punters a railcar can take, on the Connolly side you get 550+ in a 4 car 29000 while I've sat on the 1835 Hesuton Thurles, 1845 Heuston Newbridge and 1905 Heuston Galway and always got a seat as did everyone else. Problem is intercity stock is very low capacity so the system might be at capacity the trains aren't operating at peak people moving level

We have done timetable experiments and found that if the turnback platform at Adamstown is available it is possible to have a train to Kildare hourly and a second train to run non stop Heuston Adamstown, a railcar is faster point to point for the first 4 miles out since it has a collasal acceleration advantage over a intercity train so its trivial fit it in. 1 8 coach railcar carries 1240 people problem solved and for a 13-15 minute journey that level of standing is acceptable

Based on timetable today Adamstoen departures could be 5:35 and 6:15

Downside is IE are 40 coaches short on committed service levels for post 2009

I'd be more worried about the extra punters trying to get to and from Heuston since Luas won't cope nor will the bus

From my experience the 7am is very heavily loaded and Adamstown passengers would struggle to get on. The 8.30 is more accessible, especially during summer months, as it won't get you to work by 9-9.30am.

In the evenings, the 5pm is very loaded, while the 6.30 can be accessed, but its late for the 5pm finisher and really designed for destinations beyond Kildare.

In my opinion the planning scheme capacity figures for Adamstown are misguided under current service levels. The opening of the station has been postponed from April 2007 to later in the year. Perhaps IE have plans to have more stock to strengthen trains on the line to deal with the additional numbers.

One word of caution to unfortunate travellers from the new Adamstown station. Unless IE provide additional capacity prior to the KRP, there will be complaints from existing users in relation to the additional stop and resulting overcrowding. (Thats based on the current service levels though.)

Is it possible to use the Adamstown turnback to originate a train from Adamstown to Heuston between 7am and 7.45am?

And that depends on having a set to operate the service and slotting it into the working timetable.
