I don't want to appear insensitive in response to a tragic event, but this accident has produced the usual reaction from grandstanding local councillors, calling for automated crossings protected by signals.

People at user-operated accomodation crossings should be aware of how to operate them safely: I have seen gates at such crossings left open, in total contravention of the rules. For some reason this appears to be particulatly prevalent in the Mayo-Sligo-Leitrim-Roscommon area.

There was a similar accident on the Ballina branch within the past year or two. Later, when IE wanted to close 2 or 3 farm crossings in the area and build a bridge with linking roads on eother side, the locals objected (!!!). They might have to drive a few hundred yards more, apparently.

I'd like to see any line with a line speed north of 60mph treated like a motorway - grade separated. It might take a while to do but that should be the objective.
