[20/06/2010] Rosslare - Dublin 17:40 hits obstruction on track

Just heard from my sister that the 17:40 Rosslare Europort is delayed at approximately Ferns after hitting an obstruction placed on the track. According to the driver the brakes are damaged on one carriage and the driver is in consultation with engineers about bypassing said brakes.

Latest update from train is engineers have arrived, train is terminal so everyone has to detrain and walk along line to rescue train from Gorey-side

Are IE allowed to have passengers walk the line as on May 1 2009 I was on the 18:25 Heuston-Waterford when it crashed into a cow between Kilkenny & Thomastown. It happoned just after a level crossing and passengers asked to get off the train and get collocted at the crossing but they were told they couldn't for health and safty. So the train was delayed 5 hours.

According to informed sources it was due to the work of local village idiots placing rocks on the tracks. Ferns is not known for this behaviour - at least not in relation to the railway - it usually the Protestant Cathedral which receives their attention. :rolleyes:

There was space either side of the track, it was bright. When two passengers were told they were not allowed off the train to get collected and after a while they got out through the generator car. The staff didn't know as they had to assess the engine one carrage as considerible damage was caused. The staff had to close that off after that. It was the Mark3's. They had bus transfers orgnaised but they wouldnt let us walk on the line. There train had develped a tecional problem in Muine Bheag with the brake disks in one carrage and there was a bruning smell. This was the carrage behind the engine after we left Kilkenny. It would be one of the best part of the line to pck up speed so was quiet an impact. I was on the train from 18:25 until 1:50am and we had to get two engines send to the train.

so am i right in presuming this was another case of trespassing (as in locals walking the tracks) if so it highlights the need to enforce more stricter policy of ensuring people dont trespass. maybe a few high-rise cameras over the line and highlighting the penalty for trespassing (not that it would make a difference)

Train involved had a front and rear camera so that might reveal something.

It appeared to be near the bridge at the old station in Ferns so was probably somebody tipping stuff off that. My sister said it felt like turbulance in an aircraft as the train went over it (she was in the second carriage)

As a follow up my sister had nothing but praise for the IE staff involved, there was only a driver on board and he kept the passengers informed all the way through. When it came time to transfer to the new train the IE engineers looked after everyone very well and even went and picked up snacks and drinks for all the passengers at Arklow.
