I would like to apologise for the slow speed of this train

So said the driver of the 09.05 clonsilla connolly this morning.
Due to a slight technical problem. I hadnt noticed until he said it.
Also apologised for waiting in the black hole outside of connolly for a few minutes.

Theres a first time for everything....
More staff like this lad would be a bonus.

We got no apology this morning in maynooth waiting on the 6.58 which arrived about 10mins late.

All we got was station announcement to say it was late

Maybe the amount of apologies you get is inversely proportional to the amount of people on the train?
There was a good 70 on mine.

Personally, I can't see the point of Irish Rail apologies. I get a sincere apology for some reason almost every day.

I always understood that part of the meaning of an apology was to express regret that something had happen and that an underlying consequence of said regret would be to make an attempt for the same thing not to happen again.

So, whenever you receive an apology from Irish Rail they are in effect, lying given that the same apology is likely to be made the next day. So basically they would be better off saying "The train is late, s**t happens, get over it" because that is what they actually mean.

Much hilarity ensued from announcements on 0545 Sligo-Dublin this morning. All of the 'We are now arriving at ....' announcements were played at about 10x normal speed.

But the rest of the announcements were fine.

It took me back to the halcyon days of twin tape decks back in the 80's. Still it proabably would have been slightly less amusing for anybody with poor vision.
