Extract from letter in the Indo today...

"The case of the Dart driver who walked for three miles, in the snow and ice, so that he could perform his public duty, throws into sharp focus the difference between a low-paid worker, who quietly goes about his duty, and a Minister for Transport, his boss, who wouldn't understand the concept of public duty if it drove a DART train over him.

Wouldn't be calling a DART driver low paid, not high paid either but on the sunny side of €40k.

To the credit of the front line staff, the vast bulk got to work in very challenging conditions, fairly sure some stayed overnight in the depots countrywide as they couldn't get home. It was the frontline staff who kept everyone moving. Just remember on Sunday the driver of the Tralee train was on his own yet got the train home against all the odds

You can't buy that kind of dedication to duty, indeed thats why the rail network was still safe in the days when the safety audits said it was dangerous, staff knew there job and kept things going

Some of the people in Irish Rail go well above and beyond the call of duty but I get the distinct impression that they don't get rewarded for it. There used to be a guy at Edgeworthstown that came out with a watering can full of hot water to clear people's windscreens on frosty evenings. But now the stations is closed most evenings.
