Hope this isn't set up already somewhere else.

May I suggest we report cold trains here? Make sure you include the date and time of the service, and the coach number.

I'll start with:

8 Dec 2009, 22:25 Pearse - Dundalk. Coach 29312. No heating on (metal vents below seats completely cold).

Background is Irish Rail gave an undertaking to sort the heating out on the Northern line at the meeting on Monday

Myself and James happened to speak to a manager afterwards who seemed most serious about sorting it out

11-Dec-2009, 17:55 Pearse-Drogheda. Coach 29103 - no heating on (vents stone cold).

The idea of getting the doors to auto close after 90 seconds has been pitched to an IE manager, its a simple software modification.

It would be a very good idea. NIR already does it.

Of course, on those trains where passengers can close the doors themselves, feel free to do so.

I informed staff at Dundalk that there was no heating on train at 6.10am to which the staff member replied 'it is on'. I asked if he could check because the train was freezing. At 6.30am (time of departure) an orange jacket appeared, turned the train off and turned it back on again - but still no heat. At 6.40am we were told to move to another train and finally departed at 6.45am. If the staff member had checked when I reported it we might have actually departed on time

07:05 from Athlone to Galway

No heating yesterday in carriages A & B.

Interesting. I was on the 07:10 Dublin-Galway/Mayo. Coaches A&B were freezing in both on Monday and Wednesday morning. Coach B was 22407 on Wednesday, didn't get the number on Monday.

The 7:10 splits in Athlone. One Monday the ticket checker was helpful, telling people to move into the Galway end of the train for heat, or to coach C which had some heat. There was also some talk of using a spare set from Athlone, as some sort of generator/engine was not working.

Approach on Wednesday was move everyone into B, where there were more passengers so the carriage was slightly less cold.

Heating was working this morning, but sounds like there are 1 or more set of 3 carriage 22000s floating around the Galway line with no heating in this weather. Birrrr

No heating on first two carriages. I suspect it's the same set as yesterday reversed. It's currently 4c in this carriage

No heating in 3rd last carriage - absolutely freezing. I wonder does VHI cover Irish Rail induced frostbite!

13:05 Dublin-Sligo Dec 30th. 4 carriage commuter (driver actually announced it as the "13:05 commuter service to Sligo").
Jammed. No heat. Everyone around me asked the ticket inspector could he do something about getting it turned on, to which he said "I'll see". Still wasn't on when I stood up to get off at Carrick on Shannon, when I realised my legs were half numb with the cold.

11:00 Sligo-Dublin Jan 3rd. Proper new InterCity train, plenty of space nice and warm for the first hour. Until the sun went in and I realised that's what had been keeping me warm, the heat was off again.

I find it odd that the two systems on trains most visible to passengers - heating/aircon & station information are so consistently banjaxed.

Would it be a huge leap to infer from this that more safety critical systems are frequently in a similar situation or is it just that nobody is bothered keeping the less critical systems in working order?

I suppose it is an improvement over the old stream-heated early Monday Sligo to Dublin service that regularly didn't have lights let alone heating.

The NTA contract has targets for the soft issues which will hurt Irish Rail for failure to deliver

The safety critical systems are safety critical and fail safe, if they don't work you don't move.
